Following the accession of Romania to the European Union in early 2007, the country has started to benefit from the advantages of being a member, in respect to strengthen its capacity to enforce EU rules. The Regional Operational Program 2007 – 2013 (REGIO) is one of the Romanian Operational Programs (POR) being agreed with the EU and an important tool for implementing the national strategy and regional development policies. It applies to all eight development regions of Romania. The overall objective of this program is to “support and promote local sustainable development, both economically and socially, in the regions of Romania, through the improvement of business environment and infrastructure that support economic growth.” The REGIO program aims to reduce economic and social development disparities between the more and less developed regions.
The POR total budget is approximately 4.4 billion EURO available for the first seven years after Romania‘s accession to the European Union (2007-2013). The total amount of funds available for this program consists of 84% from EU money and the remaining funding comes from national public co-financing (14%) and the rest from private co-financing (2%).
The Funds distribution is made based on the priority of domain of the Regional Operational Program. To each priority domain is allocated a certain budget and it also includes a number of key areas of intervention.
