Starting from October 1, 2025, the Hungarian Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR in short) have increased across several product categories. This increase in EPR fees in Hungary directly affects all domestic manufacturers and importers.
The EPR system aims to ensure that producers bear the costs associated with the waste management of the products they place on the market, thereby encouraging a transition toward a circular economy.
While certain categories, such as plastic, paper and metal packaging, have remained unchanged, several areas have experienced significant increases:
The EPR fee increase thus particularly impacts businesses in the textile, furniture, paper and printing and battery industries.
From the fourth quarter of 2025, all affected companies must calculate their EPR obligations based on the new fee rates. This will lead to a substantial cost increase in several industries, which companies will need to manage through efficiency improvements or price adjustments.
The increase also sends a clear message: lawmakers intend to create stronger incentives for sustainable practices. In the long term, companies that prioritize circular design, sustainable packaging and eco-friendly materials will gain the most competitive advantage.
