How to register for VAT in the Czech Republic? | News Flash

June 13, 2022

Are you obliged to register for VAT in the Czech Republic? We have summarized some useful information that can help you during the VAT registration process.

VAT registration process for foreign companies in the Czech Republic

Foreign companies may face difficulties right at the beginning of the process. The first reason is that VAT registration in the Czech Republic is possible only in electronic form – the applicant may use either a data box or a verified electronic signature. However, it is difficult for companies that were not established in the Czech Republic to gain them. The foreign company, therefore, needs a representative in the Czech Republic who will represent the company and, on the basis of a signed power of attorney, arrange the registration for value-added tax or VAT One Stop Shop (OSS) on its behalf.

Another barrier may be the language. The official language of the Czech tax authorities is solely the local language, therefore all communication and documents must be in Czech.  It is the duty of the abovementioned representative to ensure the professional communication with tax administrators, including answering any additional questions and mitigating doubts.

VAT registration process and related documentation

In general, for the Czech VAT registration the following documents are needed:

  • Excerpt from the Commercial register
  • Confirmation of VAT registration in your country
  • Confirmation of bank account
  • Cover letter explaining your planned / ongoing business activities in the Czech Republic
  • Additional documents depending on the reason for VAT registration

The processing of VAT registration by the tax authorities takes approximately 3 to 6 weeks (usually the tax authorities have additional questions during the VAT registration process). And the process does not end with registration itself. The company must then take care of the related obligations – regular filing of Czech VAT returns, Intrastat reports or customs declarations.
